Hallmarking (Precious Metals)

Hallmarking is the UK’s official method of verifying the purity of precious metals. A hallmark is applied by an independent UK Assay Office as a small stamp, confirming that the metal meets legal fineness standards for gold, silver and platinum.

Most precious metal jewellery is hallmarked, but very lightweight items can be legally exempt. As a general guide, UK hallmarking is required above the following weight thresholds:

  • Gold: 1.0g or more
  • Silver: 7.78g or more
  • Platinum: 0.5g or more
